Attending Saint Augustine’s University ( 探花精选) has been a dream for three brothers from Hope Mills, NC. Kevin, Bryan, and Donovan Brewington have always been close, sharing a love for sports and a desire to pursue higher education. Kevin and Donovan came to 探花精选 in 2020, while Bryan joined them in the mid-fall semester of 2022. They’re all attending the same university now, where they’re pursuing their dreams and making a name for themselves in the world of athletics.

The Brewington brothers all played football at the same high school, South View High School in Hope Mills, NC. Now, they’re all playing together in college at 探花精选, pursuing their passions for football and education. It’s a rare college dream they had always hoped for and one they’re living out to the fullest.

However, 探花精选 was not the first college choice for any of them. Donovan played football at the University of North Carolina for his first year of college before transferring to 探花精选. Bryan began his collegiate career at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke before switching to Saint Augustine’s mid-season. And Kevin was originally committed and signed to play football at Western Carolina University before eventually switching to 探花精选.

Despite the twists and turns that led them to 探花精选, the brothers couldn’t be happier pursuing their education and passion for football together. Kevin came to 探花精选 pretty much to play with his older brother Donovan. When Covid affected his plans to play football at Western Carolina, he switched to 探花精选 so that he could play with his brother.

“We’ve always been close, so being able to attend the same school and play sports together is amazing,” Donovan said. At 探花精选, Kevin and Bryan are both majoring in sports management, while Donovan is studying exercise science. They’re all thriving on and off the field, pursuing their passions and developing the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen fields.

“We’re all grateful to be here and to be able to pursue our dreams together,” Bryan said. “It’s been an amazing experience so far, and we’re excited to see what the future holds.” For the Brewington brothers, the future is full of endless possibilities. They’re all committed to working hard and pursuing their goals on and off the field. And they’re doing it all with a sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the opportunities they’ve been given.

As they continue on their journey, Donovan, Bryan, and Kevin are an inspiration to anyone who has ever faced adversity or struggled to find their path in life. They prove that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, brotherly love, and a little luck.

Saint Augustine鈥檚 University ( 探花精选) landed another former professional athlete familiar with the Triangle as their next football coach.

The 探花精选 Department of Athletics announced Howard A. Feggins as the leader of the Falcons during a special press conference on Thursday, March 23, 2023. Feggins has four decades of football experience as a coach, player, and athletic consultant.

鈥淚 am excited to welcome Coach Feggins to 探花精选,鈥 said 探花精选 President Dr. Christine Johnson McPhail. 鈥淗is experience, leadership, mentorship skills, and football philosophy align well with our university鈥檚 mission.鈥

A former defensive back at the University of North Carolina and in the NFL with the New York Giants and New England Patriots, Feggins spent last season as the offensive coordinator at Fayetteville State University. With Feggins as offensive coordinator, the Broncos went undefeated in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division. In addition, they ranked second in total offense en route to their 2022 CIAA football championship. As a result, Feggins was also named the offensive coordinator for the 2023 HBCU Legacy Bowl in New Orleans, LA.

鈥淎fter a national search for a person who embodied a reimagined university with the history of winning championships, Coach Howard Feggins surfaced as the choice,鈥 said 探花精选 Dean of Collegiate Athletics and Exercise Science Dr. Lin Dawson, who also serves as Acting Athletic Director. 鈥淭he interview committee was diligent in the search for Transformational Leader, and we have found one.鈥

Before the Fayetteville State season, Feggins spent four seasons as an assistant football coach with Colorado State University-Pueblo from 2018-2021. During his first two years as running backs coach, the Thunderwolves won the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) championship, where two running backs, Marche Dennard and Bernard McDondle, earned invitations to the 2018 NFL Rookie Minicamp. In addition, his coaching led to Isaiah Diggs making 2019 All RMAC First Team Punt Returner and running back Austin Micci winning the 2019 RMAC Academic Offensive Player of the year. Furthermore, under his tutelage, CSU Pueblo Wide Receiver Dionte Sykes signed a 3-year Contract with Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League. Feggins spent his remaining years at CSU Pueblo as Returners Coach, Receivers Coach, and Offense Academic Liaison, resulting in a team GPA of 3.2. His experience also included serving as Community Service Liaison and Race Relations Liaison. In addition, he facilitated multiple zoom meetings on Race Issues in America with NFL Coaches and Youth Coaches.

鈥淚鈥檓 excited for the opportunity of the young men and to show them, if they give me all that effort, then we have an opportunity to win,鈥 said Coach Feggins. 鈥淭he President, Dr. McPhail, and the Athletic Director, Dr. Dawson, are very supportive of the growth and direction of the program.鈥

Since 2015, he has owned SACS Sports, LLC, a consulting firm with parents and high school student-athletes to help them gain more exposure. He has also been an evaluation coach with NextGen All American Camp & The Show.

Feggins spent the 2014 season as the head coach at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He guided the team to a 6-5 season and a playoff appearance.

Before the season at Warren Central, Feggins had been in the college ranks since 1995. In addition to the coordinator (pass game and offensive) experience since 2004, he earned the NFL Minority Internship. He served as a training camp offensive assistant with the New England Patriots in 2003 and 2008.

A 1987 University of North Carolina graduate, Feggins was a four-year letter winner for the Tar Heels. A cornerback and strong safety, Feggins totaled 169 tackles during his career. As a sophomore, he ranked sixth on the team with 83 tackles. During Feggins鈥 junior year, the Tar Heels posted a 7-4-1 record and played in the Aloha Bowl. He earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in education.

Feggins played briefly in the NFL with the New England Patriots and New York Giants. He also spent two seasons with the London Monarchs of the now-defunct World League of American Football.

Feggins and his wife, Renee, have two sons, Kevin and Jensen.

Veteran Sports Journalist receives honor for the third time since 2008听

The reimagining of Saint Augustine’s University ( 探花精选) ‘s Athletic Department now includes the recognition of one of its long-time storytellers. Veteran Sports Journalist Anthony Jeffries recently was named 2021-22 CIAA Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year at the CIAA Spring Meeting Awards Ceremony in Baltimore on May 17, 2022. The league SID honor is the third for Jeffries, the 2007-08 and 2011-12 recipient. 听

“I was surprised and elated simultaneously,” Jeffries said. “I would like to give a special thanks to 探花精选 Athletic Director David Bowser. His vision for me and the SID position led to this award.” 听

In his 17th year as sports information director at 探花精选, Jeffries serves as the media contact person for the athletic program. Since joining the Falcons’ athletic staff in August 2005, he has been responsible for providing statistics, game stories, and press releases to the media for each of the university’s 12 sports. In addition, Jeffries coordinates media interviews in addition to producing athletic publications such as posters and schedule cards.听

“I also want to thank Associate Athletic Director Leon Carrington for his guidance,” Jeffries said. “The Marketing & Communications Team led by Vice President Dr. Carolyn Carter and Associate Vice President Demarcus Williams along with the social media support from the Chris Williams PR Team were very instrumental in the success of our Sports Information Department.”听

In 2017, Jeffries won the Excellence in Communications Award from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for outstanding coverage of the internationally renowned 探花精选 track and field program. In addition, he earned the national honor in the NCAA Division II category. Jeffries’ award-winning experience includes over 30 years of sports journalism in print media with stints at the Smithfield Herald, The Chapel Hill News, The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, and the Greensboro News & Record.听

鈥淢y name may be on the plaque, but it wasn’t a one-person show,” Jeffries said.听

The Saint Augustine’s University Department of Athletics and Men’s Golf Program are saddened about the passing of legendary golf coach Lawrence “Peaches” Coleman on Thursday, June 3. Their deepest condolences go out to the family.

In February 2021, Coleman was featured on the 探花精选 Official Athletic Website (saintaugfalcons.com) during Black History Month.

Below is a reprint of the article.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH FALCON FACTS: LEGENDARY GOLF COACH LAWRENCE COLEMAN

RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 22) 鈥撎齃awrence Coleman is known for his nickname “Peaches” and better known as a coaching legend.

Coleman took over the reigns as golf coach at then-Saint Augustine’s College in 1972, one year after he graduated from his alma mater. He took the program to unparalleled heights, including six HBCU national championships (1990-1994), including five Division II crowns, and seven CIAA titles.

The Falcons won the HBCU overall title in 1993, which drew widespread attention for what resulted afterwards. President Bill Clinton invited Coach Coleman and his Falcons to the White House for their accomplishment at the PGA National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship, which Coleman helped start.

Saint Augustine’s, a NCAA Division II school, edged Division I and defending champion Jackson State by one stroke to earn the White House invite.

Coleman coached numerous CIAA individual champions, including Chris Brown, who was considered the nation’s best HBCU golfer during the early 1990s. Coleman also won many CIAA coach-of-the-year awards.

The Falcons coach retired in 2009 after 37 years at the helm.

His work didn’t go unnoticed. Coleman is in the National Black Golf and CIAA Hall of Fames.

Below is a Q&A with Coach Coleman:

How were you able to build the golf team into an HBCU national championship program?

Minority golfers were and still are hard to find; you don’t find many on high school golf teams. Recruiting was the key; fellow Falcons and friends who referred the golf program to potential recruits were a tremendous help.

Exposure was another method. Not only did the team participate in CIAA-sponsored tournaments, but also in tournaments along the East Coast. Often, the Saint Augustine’s golfers would be the only HBCU team participating in tournaments (schools such as the Naval Academy, UNC-Pembroke were the opponents). The team also practiced at local golf courses where fellow golfers were interested in the “team from Saint Augustine’s”. There were times when I reached out to major golf companies (equipment and clothing manufacturers) for support. We were always the best-dressed golf team and had top-of-the-line equipment.

How was the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships created?

The NCAA was not inviting HBCU golf teams to participate in its tournaments, so a group of HBCU coaches (SWAC, CIAA) got together and decided to have their own tournament. Thus, the National Minority Collegiate Golf Championship was born [in 1987].

[NOTE: The tournament is now called the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship.]

What are your fondest memories as golf coach?

The greatest and most important memory was when the team won our first CIAA Golf Championship for the school [in 1974]. The next big moment was when the team beat a Division I school (Jackson State) by one stroke. The victory crowned Saint Augustine’s as “National Champions”. This win got us an invite to the White House at the invitation of President Clinton.

What was it like being invited to the White House?

It was a great honor for all of us in the golf program. At that time, Saint Augustine’s was the first HBCU to get an invite to the White House.

What does Saint Augustine’s mean to you?

Saint Augustine’s means a lot to me and my family. Lots of memories, experiences that help me become the person I am. I grew up and became an adult at Saint Augustine’s. I met my wife at the “Aug”; my daughters both graduated from Saint Augustine’s. It is a nurturing school and is “family”.

Why should a student-athlete come to Saint Augustine’s?

A student-athlete will get positive exposure, a good education and make life-long friends.
